Point-of-care (POC) glucose testing in the hospital is a valuable tool for the management of dysglycemia.The FDA now requires new glucose meters to be tested on critically ill patients in order to be cleared for use in this patient population. The presentation will discuss the chronology of events that led to the change in regulatory requirements for glucose meter use in the hospital, and how these impact hospital glucose testing. Additionally, clinical cases and studies showing the significance of confounding factors that affect glucose meter performance on on importance of accurate POC glucose results for improved clinical outcomes and patient’s safety will be discussed.
